Why do compact grain boundary complexions prevail in rock-salt materials?

چکیده
Over 40 years of studies grain boundaries in ionic rock-salt materials have left the community divided. On one hand, numerical simulations systematically predict open, hollow structural units to be ground state. other, most recent experiments report compact structures norm. To reconcile modelling with experimental evidence, we investigate stability three high-angle symmetric tilt magnesium oxide MgO respect presence charge-neutral vacancy pairs. We demonstrate that although open are energetically favourable, they easily destabilized by vacancies. It follows complexions can never at equilibrium surrounding grains finite temperature. contrary, accommodate a wide range defects concentrations, and much more resilient absorption These results highlight limitations consider only state, stress importance accounting for other when materials.

Grain boundary complexions
Grain boundaries exhibit phase-like behavior in which their structure, chemistry and properties may change discontinuously at critical values of thermodynamic parameters such as temperature, pressure and chemical potential. Therefore, grain boundaries (and other interfaces such as surfaces and heterophase boundaries) can be treated as thermodynamically stable interfacial states. To differentiat...
متن کاملGrain boundary complexions in multicomponent alloys: Challenges and opportunities
Grain boundaries (GBs) can undergo first-order or continuous phase-like transitions, which are called complexion transitions. Such GB transitions can cause abrupt changes in transport and physical properties, thereby critically influencing sintering, grain growth, creep, embrittlement, electrical/thermal/ionic conductivity, and a broad range of other materials properties. Specifically, the pres...
متن کاملGrain Boundary Segregation in Nanocrystructured Metallic Materials
The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the effects of grain boundary segregation on microstructural evolution in nanostructured metallic materials as well as on their mechanical properties. Several key topics will be covered. First, a brief explanation of mechanical stress-driven grain growth in nanostructured Al, Ni, and Cu thin films will be provided in terms of a deformation mechanism m...
متن کاملGrain boundary plane distributions in aluminas evolving by normal and abnormal grain growth and displaying different complexions
The grain boundary character distributions of selected doped aluminas were measured from normal and abnormal populations. The relative energies of the A-, C-, and Rplanes of undoped alumina were also measured. There is an inverse relationship between the population of grain boundaries and the relative energies of grain boundary planes in undoped alumina. This relationship is found to be qualita...

Article history: Received 15 June 2016 Received in revised form 9 July 2016 Accepted 9 July 2016 Available online 20 July 2016 Multicomponent alloying can be utilized to enhance the thermal stability of nanocrystalline alloys. The grain boundary energy can be reduced significantly via both bulk and grain-boundary high-entropy effects with increasing temperature at/within the solid solubility li...
